Recently I reformatted the hard drive on my notebook while installing XP home
edition and it crashed. My friend told me I needed a bios update, but is that
possible without having an OS?

Until recently, most BIOS updates had to be done by booting to floppy or CD
anyways - so yes. Get your BIOS update (if it is necessary) and get a
bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com and put your BIOS and the utility they
provide on there. Make sure you follow instructions carefully - a BIOS
upgrade (gone wrong) can permanently ruin that machine.

Alison;
You do not need an OS installed to update the BIOS.
Go to the notebook manufacturers website to check for availability of update
as well as procedure for updating the BIOS.

Why does your friend say you need a BIOS update?
A BIOS update should be performed only if there is something specific to be
gained.
Availability of a later BIOS is insufficient reason to update the BIOS.

I don't know much about it myself but I kept getting errors while trying to
load my OS. Now it takes forever to get it to boot from the CD-ROM drive at
all. I have no idea what is going on with it.

Well, he did had problems with Windows XP, sometimes it's BIOS related.
In my case I had to update my BIOS because when I installed WinXP sp1
or later, it consume alot of system resources, taking forever to open a
folder, et. I even made a clean install at the time, thinking that it
was spyware or adware related. But with the BIOS update it worked
perfectly till this day! :)
