Need advise on server problem

I recently ran some updates on an older W2K Server machine. While doing the
IE6SP1 update an error stating that a couple of files could not be backed
up,I didnt write down the filenames. After the update finished. A reboot was
required. But now I'm getting an error and a forced shutdown. The error is:

The System Process: "C:\Winnt\System32\lsass.exe" terminated unexpectedly
with status code -1073741795.
The System Will Now Reboot.

This just keeps looping. I've tried entering the different startup modes and
I've also tried doing a repair from the W2K disk with no success. This
machine also has a damaged backup tape, so a backup of the system is not
available :(.

Can someone advise me on how to correct this without reinstalling the
OS,,,if it's at all possible?

Thanks,
Richard

The system wont completely boot to get to the desktop, can a check for this
be done at the repair console from the W2K CD?
