I asked the above question and got a few useful replies.
But... I have a problem.
This is the scenario:

I have a PC that is connected to a network via one network connection.
How can I share the internet FROM this PC?
Can I somehow do this by USB?

Else... can I connect a router to the network and use the connection
off this?
What hardware would I need?
I have an ethernet modem - would this be the right hardware?

Thanks.

A router would be the best and easiest solution. The modem hooks into the
router. All the other computers that need internet access hook into the
router. If you already have a network then there are some other steps
involved.

To set up Internet Connection Sharing and use your present pc that is
connected to the internet you need two network ports on the pc. One of them
could be a USB/ethernet adapter.

If your internet connection on your existing pc is through your LAN then you
should be talking to whoever administers the LAN. You could use either of
the above solutions but it is more complicated than just hooking things up.

What it comes down to is how is your present pc hooked up? Direct to a LAN
or direct to an internet connection? If it's directly to an internet
connection is it dial up or broadband?
