NEC 9820 questions

Greetings,

I've got a NEC 9820, 200MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, Windows 98SE (alright,
you can stop laughin' now!). Every time the system boots it pauses
at the Windows logo screen for about a minute or so. No hard drive
activity, no sound, no action, no nothin'! And then it continues to
boot just fine. Is this normal for a computer of this vintage? I've
been into the BIOS, what there is of it, and everything seems to be
set to the default settings.

Also, I have a friend who has a 233MHz chip that he will give me.
Would 33MHz extra CPU speed show any noticeable improvement in
system performance? Yes, I'm planning on getting another 64MB of RAM
for this puppy (128MB is the max for this unit), but just wondering
iffn it is worth the trouble to replace the CPU as well?

This isn't a mission critical unit, just something that I am
tinkering around with. Or do you folks think I'm spittin' into the
wind here?
Thanks all.

Do you have a network?
Maybe Windows is looking for network connections which aren't available
anymore. Maybe it's looking for a DHCP server/router?

Ehm, why??
Why do you want to update this system from 'almost nothing' to
'a little bit more than almost nothing but still considered nothing at all'?
:)

ok, seriously, depending on what you are doing with this pc..
(what are you doing???)
+33Mhz is about 14% speed improvement, but that's only
pure processor speed. If your friend is giving you this cpu, yeah, why
not.

Just don't expect you can run Vista now ;)

Marcel

No, no network. I've run it as a stand alone and I've hooked it up
to a DSL connection. But it's acted like this ever since I insalled
Win98se on it. I think it had Win95 on it before I got my grubby
little hands on it, but it was trashed, so I upgraded. Seems to work
fine, except for the long boot.

Yeah, just got this chip and figured why the hell not?? :)

Eventually I'm going to donate it to some one who can't afford a
computer, just for email and light suffin' and such.

Alright, ya talked me into it.

Hah, I wouldn't even run Vista on my main machine for any reason. At
least not for a couple of years, until it gets broken in and patched
up! :)

Marcel
