This list is loooong, so I just tried typing a page number
into the page number place. It didn't work: said page 10
couldn't be found. Why not? Can anybody tell me how to
use this list without having to go page-by-page backwards
12+ pages?

Try a news reader client such as Forte Agent or Outlook Express
instead of a browser. Then you can scroll all of the message headers
with ease.

I was able to go to a specific page by clicking the arrows
once then putting in which page I wanted.

Hi,

Make sure that you enter a number that is within the
range of available pages. Click on the GO button after
entering the page number.

Thanks to both of you. Yes, going to the second page then
typing in a distant page number seems to work. And yes,
using a newsreader is easier -- but raises another issue
for me in that I can't seem to "subscribe" to the list
properly; I can read stuff, but can't seem to reply.

If one of you could help me set that up correctly, I'll
put in a good word with Santa!

thanks
..

See the link in my signature for tips on setting up OE newsreader.
