Narration & music won't play nice

I want recorded narration & also simultaneously play some background
music.
The problem is I can't get the music & the narration to play nice
together.
Each sound will play separately, but not together!
Any thoughts on what is causing my problem? I've tried the music file
as WAV & MP3.
To make matters more complex, I'm wondering what will happen when I add
a Flash movie with sound to the mix. I'll probably cut the music at
that point, but are there ways to optimize sound files so that they
sound well when played together.

Appreciate any help!

Regarding why you don't listen, you need the right sound card for
simultaneous tracks.
Second, remember PPoint is not an audio editor ; considering the complexity
of your sound reproduction (multitrack) I'd advice you to mix/overlap sounds
in an editor so you may regulate levels, create one file and then insert in
PPoint. Outcome would be superb, just that this time slides would have to be
sync to audio, slides won't be ruling sound in and out.

What version of PPT are you using? It may be something as simple as the
sounds' custom animation settings.

It could also be a limitation of your sound card, though.

I have PP 2000. I toyed with the animation seetings but had no success. Quite
possibly my sound card is the culprit. The system I'm on is fairly old.
I
think I will wind up going with Gus Collot's excellent advice and merge the
narration with my music track.

Thanks for the response!
