Napster appeared after AVG free update

I tried to do a follow up on the 'how do I get rid of napster' post but the
server would not let me.
I noticed this too, I thought the new version of AVG had done it as after I
installted it there was another package installed in 'add/remove' called
'avanquest' and that one will NOT remove with the windows remove.
I went thru the registry and deleted all references and entries for both
napster [quite a few] and avanquest, exited and rebooted and they were
back. Spent 3 hours on it last nite and I'm a mite ticked, this box is a
media center PC and I keep it clean, it really pisses me off when vendors
do this even with freeware like avg and like adobe and others sneaking in
that google tool bar. I want that butterfly back !!!!!! and napster
removed.
My sniffer has already seen some packets going out that were not there
before or over the last 5 months. My other XP pro box that I installed the
AVG on is doing the same thing but the other 2 also running XP pro and have
not had it are still quiet and AVG has not been updated yet on those and
has forced me to lock down my pix even futher on outgoing packets till I
find out whats going on. Guess I better turn the syslog back on.

Guess this is going to get me off my butt and mythtv running on my fedora
core box and maybe even buy a copy of sagetv. I spend way too much time
fixing my windows boxes while the linux boxes just keep chugging away and
my replay 4508 sure does not give me this kind of problem. :-)

Well if AVG is calling up that Napster thingy, then I guess you'll have to
stop using AVG. What do you want from a free anti-virus program? Maybe if
you purchased the retail version, it wouldn't feed you this crap? Mind you,
I'm not advocating for purchasing any anti-virus software. That's the
Microsoft way of doing business. GNU/Linux frees one from this silliness.

Great idea! Now just do it and quit complaining about AVG and all the other
similar crap that Windows users have become habitually dependent on to keep
their 'puters running.

Cheers.

I've got the free version of AVG on a box here, and it does none of
what you or the OP described. I'd wager this Napster thing is coming
from somewhere else.

Me too cause I have it in WMP and I don't have AVG on my computer.

For some reason THIS newsgroup won't let me reply post.
I finally figured it out, microsoft was kind enough to put all those PAY
FOR SERVICE items and NOT put in a 'none' option on the right click
menu. They must have pushed it down during a 'security
update'....financial security actually...

I have it also and if you click on the down arrow next to the Napster icon
you will see a whole lot more like CinemaNow, Musicmatch, MLB.com,
Audible.com and more.

I do wonder what happened to the MS flag that used to be there, though.

I highly doubt you got Napster from an AVG update (unless you got AVG
from a source different than the manufacturer' themselves).

I got it directly from Grisoft and have not seen this issue on any of
the computers that I've installed it on.

If you didn't get AVG Free from here - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 -
then who knows what you really got...

It did not come from AVG, it must have been included in a critical update
or a security update, not from AVG. I fired up a spare drive with XP pro on
it from two months ago, installed the new version of AVG and it did not put
it in there. Ran the updates and there it was. My misinterpretation of
events led me to the AVG thing. Was not thinking about the automated
updates.
