Mystery with Network Places and lmhosts

Hello everyone,

Looking for a brain child that can help me solve this mystery.

I just started a new job and I am on a large netware network. I have 3
servers that I need to maintain and the only way I can access using
Windows Explorer is \\<ipaddress>

I found out that I can use the lmhosts file to create a lookup for the
ipaddresses and that is as follows

x.x.x.2 myserver1 #PRE
x.x.x.3 myserver2 #PRE
x.x.x.4 myserver3 #PRE

I reloaded and now, using Internet explorer I can browse using http://
to myserver1 and at dos I can ping myserver1 but when I attempt to use
\\myserver1 to connect from windows explorer nothing happens.

How can I configure my computer LOCALLY to use the \\myserver to
connect to the server instead of using the \\x.x.x.2 ip address? We
all know this can be done, but who has the skills to tell us how?

Is this Netware over IP, or Netware using native IPX/SPX? If the latter, you're
wasting your time.

If you're using Netware over IP, check the Node Type in "ipconfig /all". If
you're also using NetBT broadcasts to resolve addresses, you'll have problems.

Ok, I read the resource you gave and I'm still a little stumped. Under
Network Properties I have
[x] Novell Client for Windows
[x] Client for Microsoft Networks
[x] Novell Distributed Print Services
[x] File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
[x] NWLink NetBOIS
[x] NWLink IPX/SPQ/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocal
[x] Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Under the ipconfig /all
I have Peer to Peer

.........
Now I don't use any of the Novell shares so if I have to do away with
Novell to make this work so be it. We just want to make this work, if I
need to lose a few connections I am not required by my job to use so be
it. The three servers I am using are not configured on the Novell
network anyway.

Is this the client computer? What does the server use?

Node Type Peer-Peer requires a WINS server. Have you setup WINS on your
network?

All three servers use
[x] Client for Microsoft Networks
[x] File and Printer Sharing
[x] Network Monitor Drivers
[x] Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

The above was my client computer (my desktop) that I configured the
lmhosts file for.. The goal here is that my desktop can access all
three servers using \\myserver1 \\myserver2 and \\myserver3 from
Windows Explorer using only a local configuration. It can be done.. but
how is the question.

OK, so it looks like Netware is simply the server OS. Configure your clients
for normal Windows Networking, ie NetBT. Remove all gratuitous protocols and
transports.
