Mystery Address that won't go away

I have a problem with an address that won't go away. The address is for the
Kelly Blue Book http://www.kbb.com It was not added as an IE favorite but
yet when I go in the URL space and type in the letter "K" it pops up with
other favorites of mine that start with the letter K.

Also when I go into IE Properties where the home page is and type the letter
K it shows up?!?!?!? I clear my History file and Cookies as well at the Temp
folder and Temp Internet folder as well at least once a day. I use SpyBot
and Norton AV as well as the MSN toolbar for pop up blocking.

I had a similar problem like this once and someone told me to clear the Temp
Internet Folders' cache by through the command prompt but I lost those
instructions. I can't find "kbb' in the registry or though a file search on
my entire hard drive while showing all hidden and system files.

I use IE 6.0 with all the latest updates 128 bit encryption too. (Windows ME)

Please help me for this minor but annoying problem.

Caesar,

Here is one sure way to clear the cache.

Delete the History folder and index.dat:

Additionally, you may turn off "use inline autocomplete for web addresses" setting in the Internet Options, Advanced tab.

I have had that problem. Sometimes you type in a URL by mistake and if you
wait too long, it gets stored.
If you purged the history, then it's in the registry.
Do the following:
Close all your running programs.
Run regedit (start->run or via your favorite way) and you should find
kbb.com in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Internet Explorer,
Typed URLs
Double click on the item, url-xx and change it to a good URL, even if
it's a repeat. Do not delete it! Remember what you changed it to.
You should find a second copy under HKEY_USERS, Software, etc, just as
before.
Change it to the exact same URL as you did before.
Now, exit the registry editor and reboot
That usually takes care of it for me.

Henry, I went to both of those regisrty keys and they were both blank. Like
I said before I do delete the History often so I probably cleared it out the
last time I did that.

Ramesh, the autocomplete trick worked. If I re-enable it I see the
offending URL again. I would like to use this feature though but I may leave
it off for a little while.

Thanks to both of you for your very quick and helpful responses. I just
have to believe that these URLs are being stored in some file on my C drive
hopefully I'll stumble across it or someone may post it here.

There are input fields on that page. Did you use them and do you have
AutoComplete for Forms enabled? If so the page would have to have
been recorded in the registry to document that association.

I have previously speculated that perhaps going back to such pages
and using them to delete all forms information *might* conceivably
remove such URLs from the registry but I have never investigated
this possibility. Otherwise I think that you would have to clear *all*
saved Forms information. Further, since so many people have difficulty
even after they claim to have done this I suspect it would only be useful
to do it with *all* IE windows closed and iexplore.exe provably not in
the list of active processes (e.g. using Task Manager.) Then I would
use the Control Panel's Internet Options applet (or Run...
control inetcpl.cpl
) in order to first Clear AutoComplete for Forms History (and Passwords
too if there is a saved userid/password combination associated with the
site). Since these entries seem to generate fake Visited: entries in the
History you might also have to temporarily disable all AutoComplete
functions and then Clear History (on the General tab.)

Alternatively there is some speculation that the faked Visited: entries
are the real source of such AutoSuggest entries. In that case deleting
the entire History.IE5 subdirectory, including especially its index.dat
*instead* of using the Clear History function may be the way to avoid
those. Since the History.IE5 subdirectory is going to be rebuilt as soon
as IE is opened again, I would leave all AutoComplete functions
disabled until then. Of course, there is no reason why the faked Visited:
entries might not be generated again as soon as you turn AutoComplete
functions back on so you should test for that as soon as it is rebuilt.

FYI you can test the contents of History.IE5\index.dat by navigating to
that subdirectory (e.g. via CD commands) and issuing the following
find command:

find /i "Visited:" index.dat

Note: omit the /i switch if you wish but then be careful about uppercasing
the V in Visited:

Note that there are other sources for the AutoSuggest list which do not
come from that source so there is really nothing to say that the additions
to it which I am ascribing to faked Visited: entries have to come that way.

Good luck
