Mysterious problem w/ MS Mail

I just purchased a new Dell Laptop loaded w/ Vista Business. Love the
machine, but have a very severe problem w/ MS Mail.

I've set up the account info and it points to a POP/SMTP server pair. I've
also imported about 50 folders from Outlook Express 6 from my old machine.

Ive been able to "send/receive" only once. (it downloaded the "welcome to MS
Mail" message") Now I get the following messages:

An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C0148
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server:
'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x800C0148

One other thing ... the contents of the imported folders can sometimes be
seen, and other times disappear!

I have the Windows firewall shut down, and have shut off Mcafee Security
Center software.

Does anyone out there know what might be going on here? Has anyone
experienced a similar problem?

That scenario has been much discussed here already.
Chances are, while you had the McAfee software on your machine,
it corrupted your email accounts. Remove the email accounts.
Close WinMail, and reopen. Create new email accounts.
They should work now.

Gary,

Thanks for responding. I've tried your suggestion - deleted the email acct
- shut down MS Mail, then restarted and re-created it. I'm getting something
different now ... When I attempt a send/receive, the send/receive dialog box
"flashes" for a second, but no data is displayed in it - it disappears almost
immediately.
Although the imported folders do appear on the lefthand pane, their
associated emails appear to be gone. Hmmm ... any thoughts?

Also, just be clear, I still have Mcafee on the machine, but I've shut down
all of the various "options" I can so that I believe it shouldnt be doing
much at this point.

That doesn't sound good.
I wonder if McAfee interfered with the import of your emails?
No way to tell except to uninstall McAfee completely, and redo
the import.

Instead of doing a combined Send/Receive, click the down arrow
next to that button and try separate Receive All and Send All operations.

Again, thanks, Gary. The independent "Receive All" and "Send All" functions
give similar results to what I previously described. I am going to try to
uninstall MacAfee, and recreate the mail account as you have suggested.

I'll respond to this thread with the results.

BTW - the only piece of software that I have installed myself is iTunes -
everything else came loaded with the machine. I might uninstall iTunes and
see what that does. This is painful.

OK - that did the trick.

I uninstalled MacAfee by downloading the uninstaller from their website,
rebooted and lauched WinMail. New emails downloaded, and I can see all my
folders and contents.

Now I'll have to figure out how to protect my machine from virus attack.

Thanks,

And another anti-McAfee fan is born! Congrats on your success.

Google for "free AVG" or "free Avast" antivirus programs.
You can't go wrong with either one; just remember to disable
email scanning.

If McAfee is such a JUNK program, what do you suggest for an antivirus
program?

Some are saying AVAST and NOD32 are okay.

I already mentioned the two best free ones.
Of the non-free ones, Kaspersky and NOD32 always rate
highest in comparative tests.
