Mysterious PCI adapter keeps installing

Sounds like an on-board NIC, did you check the back of the
computer for another port? SiS 900 will appear as a pci
card and since it's built in it will always detect it upon
reboot. Your best bet is to go to device manager and
disable it. It will still be there with a red x. But hey
why do that, you have two NICs instead of one! (Should
this be the case)

As for not seeing any updates available after reinstalling XP,
check your system date and time and correct it.
