Mysterious Mobile Device that won't go away

In My Computer, I have an icon for a "Mobile Device" that is completely
empty. It's details call it a "system folder". I have no mobile devices
plugged into my machine. When clicking on the mobile device icon, I don't get
the usual option of ejecting or "safely removing" the device. I can't find
any way to get rid of this icon.

Additionally, since this icon appeared, my digital camera no longer shows up
as a USB drive when I plug it in - the computer plays the sound that
indicates something has been plugged in, but neither an icon for the camera
in My Computer nor the importation wizard show up. I can't find any way to
access the content on the camera. The camera worked fine before (and still
does on other computers) and I have changed no settings on it.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Some items of hardware talk to the PC as though they are mobile devices, and
hence a mobile dievice shows up. Sat Nav systems are but one example, but
there are many others.

You don't say what make the camera is. Have a look in Device Manager with
the camera plugged in and see if it appears. It may appear with a "!" mark
or as an unknown device. If so right click and uninstall it. Then
disconnect the camera and reconnect it to see if it installs correctly.

Thanks for the reply. The camera issue seems to have resolved itself (not
sure what was going on there, exactly). The camera is an Olympus, btw.

The mobile device thing still confuses me though. As I implied, it's only
appeared recently. I haven't installed or removed any hardware in that time.
The only things I own that I know show up as a mobile devices are a Dell
handheld and my Motorola cell phone, neither of which is currently attached
(nor are their respective cradles). Nor can I find the device listed in the
device manager.

Once a mobile device is installed, it always appears in My Computer, even if
the device is disconnected. Don't ask me why.
