Mysterious Error Message

Usually when closing an application (such as My Pictures or Word) I
get this weird error message on my desktop. The box is titled
"Explorer.EXE - Application Error". The messege is "The exception
unknown software exception (OxOeedfade) occured in the application at
location 0c7c8l2a5b." with an OK button underneath. On clicking OK, I
get a smaller box, titled "Error", containing "Runtime error 217 at
037CEAEA.", with an OK. After clicking that, nothing more. But I
hadn't seen anything go wrong before or after. What's going on
beneath the surface?
