Yea, ive played around with these settings before, but each time i end
up setting it back to the defaults because I just screwed them up more
than it helped.

That's because people like ZAK can't resist showing how superior they are compared to others. As is usual in these instances, he just made a bigger ass of himself than normal. XP is the first version of Windows that's actually designed to run without a swap file. While there's always the possibility you will have an application that fails with an error message about not enough memory and be forced to restore the VM settings, we've got 100's of systems running sans swap file with the worse problem being that 2 have had error messages and it was necessity to revert to a normal mode. And as you have observed, noticeably faster.
One other side affect is the inability to get a system dump when a program fails, but when was the last time such a dump was even useful. NEVER.
For best performance you can set your page file both the min. and the max. to the max size. Also if you have another drive move it (pagefile) off of your system drive. No don't try to just open c: and right click and move or copy. Right click my computer, go to advanced, performance settings, advanced, change. Here is where you create the pagefile first on the other disk, then set it to 0 0 on c:. Then reboot.
