my whole computer is slow and i only have xp & msn messenger

my computer is slow and i have like 96%free space and its a 1 gig ram(512ddr) and at first it was quick and now i keep getting pop ups and its like slowed down alot,i defraged,disk clean up, and a virus check and nothing works....can you help me(maybe i need to format, but how do i do that?)
