My Vista Beta 2 to Vista RC1 upgrade experience

My Vista Beta 2 to Vista RC1 upgrade experience was an incredibly S L O W
process. After entering your Product Key, Vista has 5 things to do:

1. Copying Windows Files
2. Gathering Files
3. Expanding Files
4. Install Features and Updates
5. Completing Upgrade

For me, vista upgrade started copying files at 10:35 am
started gathering files at 10:55 am
started expanding files at 11:14 am
started installing features and updates at 11:33 am
started completing upgrade at 11:40 am
got to a usable Vista RC1 desktop at 12:20 pm

That's got to be a World Record for upgrading an OS.....

Upgrade takes so long because Vista must first determine what programs will
be incompatible and lot of related stuff.

Also Microsoft suggests to install the very latest Refresh for Office 2007
and the latest Updates for B2 and uninstall of incompatible apps before you
hit upgrade.

A clean install is done in about 30 to 40 minutes, on very fast and well
memory-equipped machines it does take only 20 minutes until you can use the
Desktop.

I know all that. Since I'm trying to evaluate Vista I thought I'd try an
upgrade on this test machine. On my other test machine I did a clean install
and it took around 30 minutes. I just wanted to see what upgrade would do.

That's not inconsistent with the results of others. Mine was a bare bones
XP Pro with SP2 with almost no additional software. It took 76 minutes.
The clean install was 35 minutes.

Yup, I was amazed on the fresh install of RC1, I was literally on the
desktop at the 20 minute mark. My rig is a dual core AMD at 2.6ghz and 2gb
of ram, and SATA drives.

I think my upgrade from Beta 2 to RC1 32bit was about the same. I had
installed Beta 2 on a clean hard drive with only the Office 2007 beta
version. All the latest Microsoft Vista updates were done before the
upgrade to RC1. I really did not mind the slow upgrade as it required very
little intervention except at the beginning and end. Maybe it was because I
have Vista installed on a 40GB drive or maybe because it checked out the
Windows XP Pro on my raid drive? I use the bios to switch between these two
operating systems.
