My Top 5 Problems With Vista....

G

Guest

I like Vista...or rather, I *want* to like Vista. It's the first OS I've
ever owned a truely legit copy of. Ironically, I obtained the legit copy
thinking it would cut down on the number of bugs/problems I'd have....

Anyway, here is a list of the most annoying problems I have with Vista. If
anyone can tell me how to fix them, I'd VERY MUCH appreciate it.

1.) Explorer.exe crashes when I open a folder with certain types of media
files. It's trying to preview the video files - but it can't do it for some
reason, and it crashes. Changing to 'Detail' view helps - but if I click on
a 'bad' file; explorer will crash - meaning I have to use a cmd.exe window to
delete the file.

2.) Windows Media Player crashes all the friggin time as well. Seems
related to #1.

3.) Games run poorly. World of Warcraft did fine; but games like
Battlefield Vietnam are choppy and slow. Even in compatibility mode - it
still blows.

4.) Lots of trouble working with DVD burning and movie converting. I spent
hours trying to turn a .avi file into a VCD and burn it. I couldn't find
anything that would do it and worked in Vista.

5.) I've got an old Logitec Joystick that I use whenI play Battlefield
Vietnam. No matter what I do, in Vista - the Joystick thinks it is
constantly being pushed to the left. I've recalibrated - but it doesn't help.

Please, help me fix these problems.

Did you do an update over an existing system? Are your video and other
drivers up to date? Do you have an up to date antivirus on your system?
There could be many reasons why your system is behaving like it is. How
about your hardware? Is it old or new? Did you run the Vista software
advisor prior to putting Vista on your PC?

1. Delete Vista, install XP
2. Delete Vista, install XP
3. Delete Vista, install XP
4, Delete Vista, install XP
5. Delete Vista, install XP

As you can see, there is a simple solution to problems with Vista.

Babaloo,

I think I can solve your problem also.

1) Fill the bathtub.
2) Power up your PC.
3) Get in bathtub.
4) Grab your PC.
5) Problem solved.

1.) I've had explorer.exe crash on me a couple of times as well. It
stalled for a while a few times last night, but it didn't actually quit. I
will admit though that explorer.exe has had problems for me in previous
versions of Windows also, not just Vista. Not sure what to do here.
2.) Yup, my WMP freezes up and stalls a lot. Mine's freezing a lot due to
mfpmp.exe, the DRM when changing between songs. Sometimes this is caused by
a lousy sound card driver, and Creative for me won't get some good drivers
out there. Try going to your sound card's properties, go to playback tab,
go to speakers, go to the advanced tab, and uncheck "enable audio
enhancements" or similar wording. This will probably help some, but it may
not fully fix the issue.
3.) Games typically run about 15% slower on Vista. Check your video
drivers and make sure you have the latest one.
4.) No problems with burning and converting here, but then again, I don't
do much of that.
5.) Hmm... Are you sure that the joystick isn't getting bumped left when
you plug the joystick in? If so, it will think it's stuck in that
direction.

Good luck!

Sounds like a bad codec. When Explorer crashes look for an error in the
event logs. This often identifies the file that caused the crash. Google for
the file name to see what codec it is from and uninstall that codec.
2.) Windows Media Player crashes all the friggin time as well. Seems
related to #1.

It does seem related. Hopefully the fix for #1 will fix this. If not the
same trobleshooting method can be used. Look for related errors in the event
logs then search for fixes.
3.) Games run poorly. World of Warcraft did fine; but games like
Battlefield Vietnam are choppy and slow. Even in compatibility mode - it
still blows.

Currently I'd recommend XP for serious gamers. This will change as game
programmers start designing for Directx 10 and video card manufacturers get
better drivers but the fact is currently XP is better for games.
4.) Lots of trouble working with DVD burning and movie converting. I
spent
hours trying to turn a .avi file into a VCD and burn it. I couldn't find
anything that would do it and worked in Vista.

I've also had lot's of trouble with this. So far I haven't found a DVD
burning program that works reliably. The best I've found so far is the
current version of Roxio but I only use the very basic features and
uninstall/disable all the crap that tags along.
5.) I've got an old Logitec Joystick that I use whenI play Battlefield
Vietnam. No matter what I do, in Vista - the Joystick thinks it is
constantly being pushed to the left. I've recalibrated - but it doesn't

If Logitech doesn't have a driver for Vista then there probably isn't a fix
for this.

First - thanks for the reply!
----------------------------------
I did a fresh install.

My drivers are all as up-to-date as they can be as of this weekend - but it
seems like nVidia has been putting out a lot of new versions recently.

Yes.

My hardware is all relatively new. The system was purchased about 3 months
ago.

I have not run the Vista Software Advisor. I can do that tonight.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I am thinking of installing XP again. I installed Vista mostly because I
work in IT and I wanted to be familar with the latest and greatest from MS.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have installed codecs since installing Vista; I'll try to see if I can't
track that down. I'll also see if I can't find a demo of Roxio to try out.

I've got Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 and it works on Vista. The only thing
is the "classic" programs quit responding all the time, so I have to use
it's newer methodology.

OK, then this is what you do. You dual-boot both XP and Vista. That way,
you can still use XP for gaming and still get to use the latest and
"greatest".

given the "Pirated Software" reference in your original post, I would guess
most of your Media Player and Explorer/ video problems are codec related.
WMP has been bloated and poor performing for some time. try GOM Player.
it uses internal codecs, will play almost everything I throw at it and is
free. (Plays Divx, Xvid, Flash, Winows Media, Real Player, MP4, DVD's and
more) I use winamp or Itunes for music and GOM for all the video and almost
never mess with WMP.

I'm not a gamer, but there's alot of talk about Vista's poor performance
with games. I would also suggest dual boot for games, until Vista and the
Game developers start getting along (Will happen eventually)

Burning is no problem if your burning software is up to date and Vista
Compatible. Personally, I'd stay away from Vista's burning engine and use a
third party app. I use Nero with no problems. Music CD's. Data and Video
DVD's (although I don't bother with VCD's as blank DVD's are almost as cheap
as CD's)

the problem with your joystick probably lies in your description as "OLD".
If logitech doesn't have Vista drivers available, you may need to invest in
a newer joystick. (or again, dual boot XP for games)

1. Have you installed all updates for IE?

2. If you have Media Center is it doing the same thing?

3. Try using older drivers. I had installed the the newest drivers on my PC
which had the same problem, using older drivers (go figure) fixed the problem.

4. Agian have you updated you drivers?

5. It maybe time to replace that old controller, the new ones are better. I
switched to an X-Box 360 controller which works great!

Now you done it, you'll have the newsgroup troll and all around idiot

Firefox is a great piece of software - I find it much easier to navigate
and faster than IE.

Give it a bash, and see how it goes.

Other cool points I like about Vista:

Nice Sidebar with tools that are actually useful! eg Current weather,
clock, calender, outlook appointments, ebay, BF2 live stats

Superfetch caches frequently used programs so that they load faster
after a brief introductory period.

Start Search is rapid - indexed HD (alot of HD churning initially) -
Simple to find everything.

It's just so much more prettier - Shiny black chrome windows...what
more could you want?

A stable, not bloated, not restricted, secure, fast, reasonably priced and
hardware compatible OS?

Just a thought....=)

Hello Paulson,
I have read about this problems in Vista.
The 'explorer.exe' can crash if you have some bad codecs.
! Try to unistall all the video codecs, Install Nero 8. Have all you need
for videos (everything).
If you have this problem in the future, i think is better to format your
Vista hard-drive and install it again. Remember: Format your Vista hard-drive
2 times before the clean installation. For start, search on this 'forum' all
the topics what can include the format procedure in vista. You can have some
problems with it if you don't know what you are doing...
