Running XP Pro SP2. Just tried to install McAfee's privacy program, hung up.
Talking to McAfee's tech support, they instructed me to go boot up into a
Command Prompt and run a scan. I could not enter the Command Prompt from
bootup. It simply would reboot. After some changes were made, which I don't
"think" were relevant, (such as deleting a file for iomega ZIP drive
iomdisk.sys)... now my system will not boot even from the CD ROM. I have
tried to enter a RESTORE, but the "R" option is for reboot only. It now says
I have already begun upgrading my system to Windows, and will only allow me
to continue to upgrade, to cancel the upgrade or to exit. I can create a
6-floppy start-up on this computer (which is normally networked into the one
that is down) and access internet here. If there is anyone who can assist an
old fellow to not lose his data, I'd appreciate it! BIG TIME.

There is no option in Windows 2000 or Windows XP to boot to a command
prompt. That option only existed in Windows 9x/ME.

You say it can't boot from the CD. You certainly should be able to run
Setup from the Windows XP CD

--------------
PROBLEM 1:
Can't boot from the CD.

It's probably reading the CD and then going right on to the hard drive,
even though your boot order is set to CD first and HD second.

SOLUTION 1:
Change the Boot options in the PCs BIOS to ONLY boot from CD.

PROBLEM 2:
How to recover date from a broken copy of Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP.

SOLUTION 2:
There are a 2 utilities available FREE at:

http://www.sysinternals.com/

to help you recover your data. One version is for local recovery and the
other is for remote recovery across a network.

There are other solutions available other places, too, such as:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Hope that helps!
