my sum function is not working properly

I am trying to genrate a sheet in which one column is to be summed up at the
end.
I am using the formula =SUM(......) .After it if I change the values in the
cells covered in the formula there is no change in the total sum.

Press F9 to recalculate
If that worked then you need to reset on option
Tools | Options; Open Calculate tab; click the Automatic button in the
Calculation group

Do you have calculation set to automatic or manual?
Tools > Options > Calculation tab
