I have Window XP and in the bottom right corner i have a red circle with a
white "X" in it. It keeps popping up and saying "Your computer is infected!
Windows has detected a spyware infection.."
Any tips on how to get rid of this infection? Please help if you can! Thanks
for your time!

Open the Windows Explorer and look under this path and see if you spot this
File/Folder/Application,but please don't double click it or open it just
write down the name completely and send it in your next post then do a scan
by the Spybot.

Sorry I'm not understanding what you mean by Open the Windows explorer. Is
that like Internet Explorer? Could you please rephrase that? Sorry i dont
understand.

I also ran an AOL Safety and Security Virus scan, but no viruses were found.
Now its scanning for adware/spyware. To let you know, but i dont know if i
should trust that after seeing the pop-up.

No, it is different, do this Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >>
There you will see Windows Explorer, double click it and a Window will open,
click on my computer to open your Partiton say [-] C:\Document and
settings\All Users\Application Data = look in the Right Pane and you willsee
the File/Folder there Put your Cursor/Pointer on it and Tooltip will appear
and give you information about it, write it down .

Those are two different applications.
Use Windows explorer for file management, etc., on your computer.
Use Internet explorer to connect to some other computer.

Try to Run the Avast Again and this time pay attention to the Report and
configure Avast to do a full scan, including archived files and see the end
report and write down the info.
Did you update the definitions for Avast, Right Click on the Blue Glob and
slect update, leave the registration after solving this issue.
Also Run the Spybot S&D and Lavasoft, also update them too to get the whole
benefit and get rid of whatever on your Computer.
I'm sorry but it's near 12 PM her in the UK, so forgive me if I will go to
Bed now.
If you need any help post back but please provide more info and a lot of
people will offer a great help to you.
HTH.
Don't panic keep cool and every thing will be solved.

I got to All Users, but then there was no Application Data. All that was
showed was
Desktop, Favorites, Shared Documents, Start Menu, and then this weird thing
that the name was "NTUSER" and its a DAT file with 256KB. Thats all that
showed. Any clues on where to go from here?

Just right-click on the Avast-icon in the taskbar and have a peek in the
"avast! Log Viewer". Saves you the time of a re-scan ;-)

It was alot of information to read and with alot of it i didnt understand.
I'm not much of a computer person. Though the icon that appeared at first
about my computer being infected no longer is there. Does that mean that its
gone or no? Thank you for your time, but i dont think my level experience
with computers will help me for this one.My computer scans for viruses,
adware and spyware infections and problems and nothing has come up.Should i
ignore the possible infection? I'm thinking if my computer ever comes to a
point where its really slow to have it cleaned out by professionals. Should i
do that?
