my spell check has stopped working

My spell check has stopped working.
I have checked my settings and they are fine - nothing has changed.

What happens? Is there an error message?

To find out if the correct language is applied to text, look at the status
bar, and keep in mind that the language can change at the insertion point.
You may want to turn off the "Detect language automatically" option in Tools
| Language | Set Language.
