My Regedit won't work

I need to reinstall my Mcafee... in order to do so some of my files in
regedit hkey configurations need to be deleted to do so. When i go to
start---run---type in regedit i get the following message

Windows cannot find 'regedit'. Make sure you typed the name in correctly,
and then try again. To search for a file click the Start button, then click
search

First of all, you shouldn't need to edit your registry to reinstall McAfee.
Secondly, it is odd that your system can't run/find "regedit"...
Check your System32 folder for the precence of your registry editor.
In my system, it is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedt32.exe .
Double-click on regedt32.exe if you find it there.

It's not there. And that's what Mcafee suggested. When i try to reinstall
mcafee it says i have a newer version on my computer. Yet i can't seem to
find where i haven't deleted it. They suggested going in to my hkey
configurations and getting rid of it that way

Try typing 'regedit.exe', or if that doesn't work, try
c:\Winnt\regedit.exe or c:\windows\regedit.exe.

Also, try regedt32.

Cheers,

Cliff

The Registry Editor (regedit.exe) should be in the Windows folder.

All regedt32.exe does in XP is open regedit.exe.

Try this.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

%windir%\regedit.exe

If that opens the Registry Editor, your Path is messed up.

Why don't my commands work?
http://internet.cybermesa.com/~bstewart/cmdprompt.html#6

If that does not open the Registry Editor, run the Systen File Checker
(sfc.exe)...

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

That didn't work...it says i need to put in my Xp service pack 2 disk... well
i don't have that tried looking for the download on the internet... found
it.. ran it... still won't pull up regedit at all.

All i want to do is just completly uninstall all of my mcafee software...
i've done all the usual things. add remove programs yada yada

but like i said when i asked mcafee what the problem was. They told me then
i had to go to my hkey configurations. but that's kinda hard when i can't
even get into that area of my computer... is there a reason why i can't pull
up regedit at all ??

Joey,

Try this.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

%windir%\system32\dllcache\regedit.exe

Does the Registry Editor open now?

If it does locate the regedit.exe file in %windir%\system32\dllcache copy it
and paste it into
%windir%

I have no idea if you have a WINDOWS or WINNT folder or on what drive.

%windir% is an environment variable that is the location of the system
folder.

Typing or pasting %windir% into the Start | Run box opens to the Windows
folder on whatever drive it is located. I.e. C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT.

Windows XP can be installed in either WINDOWS or WINNT.

%windir%\system32\dllcache would be C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Wes,

I have the same problem as Joey's, but my Norton Anti-Virus did not detect
at least 2 viruses which do not allow any activation or installation of
anti-virus programs. Norton asks me to change certain clauses in the
registry which my Window XP (Home Edition) cannot find. My Window XP came
pre-installed with my laptop so I do not any CD-Rom. My Window also cannot
find \dllcache or \regedit anywhere.

Joey, I share your despair and frustration.

Thanks for your help, Wes.

1. I found the folder "dllcache", but it does not contain "regedit.exe".
Similar names in the same file are: regini.exe, register.exe, regwiz.exe.

2. I replaced "Professional" in Fp40ext.inf.. Ims.inf does not contain
"Professional", so I did not change anything in it. Yet, Windows still asked
me for CD-Rom which I don't have, so the scanning has to be cancelled.

I appreciate your time and help on this.

Joey, I am sorry to hear that you have got the same trojan as I do, but I
also have at least W32/bagle.dll.gen too.

I don't have McAfee, but it helped to locate these trojans and I found the
removal instructions from Norton. If you have tried all resources and could
not find regedit, it may have been deleted somehow. See if you can obtain a
copy of regedit from Microsoft to be copied back to your computer.

I could only speak from my experience with these trojans. Even though I got
regedit and opened up the Registry, I could not find the strings that Norton
asked me to delete. I did a few other check up which seemed to tell me the
trojans were not there. I installed my Norton but it still does NOT get
registered. It is very frustrating that although I am a subscriber to
Norton, I cannot email my problem to them... I have to find time to try
their "Online Assistance"....

I wish you better luck than I do.

Joey, I also noticed something changed after when I think the computer got
infected: my Window XP will display a message: "Windows File Protection:
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore
the orginal versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 2 CD now." And of course, my Windows XP was pre-installed and I
have no disk...

My Window also cannot find \dllcache or \regedit anywhere.

Joey, I share your despair and frustration.

:

Joey,

Try this.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

%windir%\system32\dllcache\regedit.exe

Does the Registry Editor open now?

If it does locate the regedit.exe file in %windir%\system32\dllcache
copy it and paste it into
%windir%

I have no idea if you have a WINDOWS or WINNT folder or on what drive.

%windir% is an environment variable that is the location of the system
folder.

Typing or pasting %windir% into the Start | Run box opens to the
Windows folder on whatever drive it is located. I.e. C:\WINDOWS or
C:\WINNT.

Windows XP can be installed in either WINDOWS or WINNT.

%windir%\system32\dllcache would be C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

That didn't work...it says i need to put in my Xp service pack 2
disk... well i don't have that tried looking for the download on the
internet... found it.. ran it... still won't pull up regedit at all.

All i want to do is just completly uninstall all of my mcafee
software... i've done all the usual things. add remove programs yada
yada

but like i said when i asked mcafee what the problem was. They told
me then i had to go to my hkey configurations. but that's kinda hard
when i can't even get into that area of my computer... is there a
reason why i can't pull up regedit at all ??

:

The Registry Editor (regedit.exe) should be in the Windows folder.

All regedt32.exe does in XP is open regedit.exe.

Try this.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

%windir%\regedit.exe

If that opens the Registry Editor, your Path is messed up.

See this to fix your Path

Why don't my commands work?
http://internet.cybermesa.com/~bstewart/cmdprompt.html#6

If that does not open the Registry Editor, run the Systen File
Checker (sfc.exe)...

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

It's not there. And that's what Mcafee suggested. When i try to
reinstall mcafee it says i have a newer version on my computer.
Yet i can't seem to find where i haven't deleted it. They
suggested going in to my hkey configurations and getting rid of it
that way

:

First of all, you shouldn't need to edit your registry to reinstall
McAfee. Secondly, it is odd that your system can't run/find
"regedit"... Check your System32 folder for the precence of your
registry editor.
In my system, it is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedt32.exe .
Double-click on regedt32.exe if you find it there.

Ok.. i have found out i have the W32/Bagle.gen virus in my system which
from what im reading has disabled me to get into my regedit. Well how do
i go about it know.. i know the files where it is located.. can i just
delete those files ? And if i am to go into msconfig what will i turn on
or off ?

If you had a virus before, in most cases it disabled the access to
regedit.exe. Also try msconfig (Start > Run, type "msconfig")

If it WAS a malware of any sort, you should be able to access regedit
from in Safe Mode. Just select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"

Thanks for your help, Wes.

1. I found the folder "dllcache", but it does not contain
"regedit.exe". Similar names in the same file are: regini.exe,
register.exe, regwiz.exe.

2. I replaced "Professional" in Fp40ext.inf.. Ims.inf does not contain
"Professional", so I did not change anything in it. Yet, Windows still
asked me for CD-Rom which I don't have, so the scanning has to be
cancelled.

I appreciate your time and help on this.
