My problems saving or opening attachments with Windows Mail

You can try disabling spybot and see if that makes any difference. It could
be influencing things negatively.

Never install more than one antivirus program. They will interfere with
each other. Any uninstall of McAfee MUST be followed up by using
their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

Hi Martin,
I've gone through all these posts and tried just about everything that was
suggested, to no avail. I finally decided to forward an email with an
attachment from Windows Mail to my Yahoo address, on my own computer. Lo and
behold, my attachments all opened. I think I'll simply use Yahoo from now on
and leave Windows Mail alone until they figure out what the heck is wrong
with it!!
I know it's no solution to the problem, but at least I can open the
attachments. Remember what Richard Nixon said: "Solutions are not the
answer." LOL!!! Now I know what he meant!

My problems re: opening and sving attachments occured prior to installation
of Mcafee. I was running AVG and both removed AND cleaned that but continued
to have issues. Decided to try Mcafee only afterwards. Since both my
desktop and my laptop were configured exactly the same, with programs and
AV, and updates, I don't understand what's up. This is a Toshiba laptop, but
don't see any "SMS" program and I'm not running Google desktop on either
machine. Don't think others on this post were all using Toshibas. Possibly
another clue: I can't open or save any previous attachments I had previously
viewed prior to this problem. Any ideas?

Never did run two AV programs to gether. Tried AVG twice, (and removed)
-- PRIOR to installing Mcafee, but that didn't seem to be the solution. Any
guess if
Outlook would work?

Even though your problem began before installing McAfee antivirus,
one of the necessary conditions for resolving your issue is to use the
McAfee removal tool. There may well be more than one cause for your
issue.

Another aspect to consider is that when you purchased that computer
it probably came with a trial version of either McAfee or Norton antivirus.
You may have uninstalled the trial version, but it still needs to be followed
up by the appropriate removal tool. Both McAfee and Norton leave a lot
of troublesome debris behind when uninstalled.

If you have done all the above but the problem remains, I suggest you
upgrade to Windows Live Mail: http://download.live.com/wlmail

"Your symptoms are very unusual."

Wow, really? Sorry for the sarcasm, but I just totaled up 554 posts on this
board, on this topic, dating back from Feb 2007.

So, after running on Vista with no problems for a several months (on
brand-spanking new hardware), I am unable to open or save email attachments
(Windows Mail), attach files to outgoing emails, or download anything using
Firefox or Explorer. I have not made any changes to my system (downloading
files, installing new software etc.) between the "running fine" period and
the current "SNAFU" period, EXCEPT for downloading and installing the most
recent Vista updates.

I have run updates on Vista, Firefox, and Explorer. I have no antivirus
software of any kind installed. I have turned off Windows Defender and
disabled User Account Controls and restarted several times.

I have run through every fix on this board short of reinstalling Vista.
Frankly, I don't see the point, since it seems clear that the trigger for
this issue was a recent Vista update. Add in the fact the my lovely new
computer did NOT include a Vista system disk (yes I ran the utility to create
restore disks), and I am more that a bit unwilling to start from scratch.

Please tell me you will soon be providing another Vista update to fix the
issue triggered by the last Vista update, or provide me with a fix that will
not force me to reinstall my entire system.
