My Pictures folder won't resize/email pics

The My Pictures folders on both of the two computers I have runnin
WINXP (one XPHome, one XPPro) will no longer resize and email th
pictures (jpegs) that I have stored there. This failure surfaced jus
after I upgraded to IE7 and FireFox 2. I've spent much time doing we
searches and trying everything I can think of to reinstate thi
service. Ideas? Any help much appreciated. RIphi

Wes, Thanks for the two links. I had investigated both. Let m
briefly explain what is happening: I open My Pictures folder, identif
one or more pictures filed within, click sidebar "email this file", th
"send pictures via email" window opens, I indicate "make all picture
smaller" and click "OK". The window closes and nothing happens, excep
that my mailer opens a new message window. The same thing happens if
click "keep original sizes". On one computer I'm using Thunderbird mai
program. On the other, I'm using SeaMonkey.
I also tried to use the email option in Picasa and got "This emai
cannot be sent". My email programs are working normally in all othe
respects.

Problem identified with upgrade to IE7. See MS article at
http://tinyurl.com/8f0w
I had looked at this before, but did not take in its significance. Onc
again, the programmers at MS have decided for us what we need. And so
"a simple feature that allows users to more easily save, print, an
e-mail images" has been dropped ("As of Windows Internet Explorer 7
the My Pictures Image Toolbar feature is obsolete and no longe
available."). It seems to have blocked Picasa's ability to send image
by email, too.:rolleyes

I know nothing about Thunderbird mail or SeaMonkey. SeaMonkey? Who thinks
up these names? And I will not use IE7.

The link below is the My Pictures Image Toolbar for IE, I do not believe
that it affects E-mail this file in Common Tasks in a Windows folder or Send
Mail in Send To.

About My Pictures Photo Support
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/misc/mypictures/mypictures_ovw.asp

I am using IE 6 and in Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
I have Enable Image Toolbar and Enable Automatic Image Resizing both
DISABLED.

And I still can right click a picture file, point to Send To and click on
Mail Recipient and the Send Pictures via E-Mail resize dialog pops up and
works.

I have never used the Image Toolbar in IE and once I figured out how to
disable the Automatic Image Resizing I have had that disabled. It allows
you to resize pictures so that they fit your screen and you do not have to
use scroll bars to view the whole image. Sort of like toggling between
Actual Size and Best Fit in Windows and Fax Viewer.

My SWAG is that one of your animals has messed up something. ;-) Although
IE7 has a reputation for screwing up plenty. Uninstall IE7 and go back to
IE6 and see if that fixes things. Just one thought.

Does E-mail this file work in Common Tasks?

Does right click any kind of file (other than a picture file), point to Send
To and click on Mail Recipient work?

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and click OK.
shimgvw.dll is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 sendmail.dll and click OK.
sendmail.dll is Send Mail.

Start | Run | Type: regsrv32 ole32 and click OK.
ole32.dll is Microsoft OLE for Windows and Windows NT, it does a lot of
things.

Start | Run | Type: regsrv32 /i shell32 and click OK.
shell32.dll is Windows Shell Common Dll does even more than ole32.dll.

Then set your default email client.

Open Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet Options | Programs tab |
Select your email client from the drop-down list under E-mail | Click Apply
| Click OK If IE7 even has that option.

Maybe you need to unregister the files mentioned above and the register
them. Some times you have to that.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll and click OK.
Then Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and click OK.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 /u sendmail.dll and click OK.
Then Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 sendmail.dll and click OK.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 /u ole32 and click OK.
Then Start | Run | Type: regsrv32 ole32 and click OK.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 /u shell32 and click OK.
Then Start | Run | Type: regsrv32 /i shell32 and click OK.

You should get a popup message after executing each command stating whether
it was successful.

Or maybe I do not know what I am talking about and IE7 is the root of all
the problems.

Wes, I tried all of your suggestions, but the problem remains. As I
read the MS document "My pictures Photo Support" (see link in earlier
comments), the programmers who created IE7 just decided to eliminate
the resize/email function. I tried uninstalling IE7 and reinstalling
IE6, but the reinstall failed because the wizard encountered some
traces of IE7. I used System restore to go back to an earlier date
when IE6 was the browser, but the resize/email function was still gone.
As I use my computer I find that the Picasa "email the photo" does not
work any longer, nor does the same feature in Word Perfect 11. I'm
assuming that these other programs relied on the Windows feature to
work. Until/unless MS offers a patch or some third party designs a
similar feature it looks as though those of us who have updated to IE7
are out of luck.
By the way, SeaMonkey is the old Netscape in new clothing. It
works well, is smaller and can be found at:

Thanks again for the help. Any new ideas welcomed.

RIphil,

Until you get your problem sorted out, give PictureGirdle a try. Its
a free app that will batch resize hundreds of photos in one click.
This will help you with your image resizing, but you will manually
have to attach the images to your email.
http://www.picturegirdle.com

sorry about your troubles and I hope this helps in the mean time.

Thanks for the tip, scrammit. I'm beginning to think that the function
will only reappear if/when MS produces a patch. It does seem to have
disabled several other software programs that apparently relied on this
aspect of Windows for their ability to send images via email (e.g.,
Picasa, WordPerfect) so maybe there will be some industry pressure.
