My PCs wake up by themselves from standby or hibernation!

H

Hal9000

I'm having this problem since some months now: my PC randomly powers up by
itself when in hibernation or standby, which is very annoying.
I also have a laptop which has the same problem. This sucks, since sometimes
i want to use it and the battery has been killed because it powered itself
up and ran all the time without me knowing.
Both machines are running Vista. All the wake-up options in the BIOS are
disabled, and there are no wakeup timers in the BIOS. The laptop powers up
even if nothing is connected to it (no network, no usb, no nothing).
What the hell is going on? How can I prevent my pcs from waking up by
themselves? When I put them in hibernation or to sleep, i just want them to
stay there until I power them up by myself. Just using shutdown is not a
solution :(
I hope you can help me to find a solution...

Turn the mouse over onto its back.

Not levity. Vibration moving the mouse often wakes computers up. Turning
it over prevents this.

Sorry. I thought you were joking. It made me laugh. Anyway, I guess I learn
something new every day. Thank you for the information.

This morning my pc woke up by itself from hibernation. Unfortunatelly no
indication of what the cause could be! :(

Ok Hal9000,

I found this new method for you.

1. open Command Prompt
2. type "powercfg -lastwake"
3. hit enter

This will tell you what woke up your computer the last time. Now, the
trick will be IDing what is spits up is the cause.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

OK,

That didn't spit out anything useful now did it. Try this instead:

1. open command prompt
2. type "powercfg /?" (no quotes)
3. hit enter

You'll get a list of all available command options with details on
powercfg.

scroll down to the "DeviceQuery" section and follow instructions to
run. This will list all devices on your computer that can wake it up.
We'll then have to go one by one & check the little buggers. It looks
overwhelming, but it is easy to work with. Post back for help on this
and results.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I just want to say that I'm having the EXACT same problems and get the same
output from powercfg... it's driving me nuts.

When I initially did a wake_armed list in power_cfg I found that my mouse,
keyboard and HD audio were all wake armed, even though I had definitely
disabled the mouse and keyboard. Anyway, I've done it again and now all I'm
left with is the HD Audio (motherboard onboard sound), and yet my system
still wakes up.

I hope that whatever may be found to help the OP can help me too!

i think it's called 'wake up on lan' and you have to disable it from the
bios (F10 on boot up i think)

Hi,

Was one of the very first things I disabled in bios, along with wake on
mouse and wake on keyboard.

I've then also done that within Vista also, via the properties of each of
those devices... and turned of the ability for any of the usb host
controllers to wake the system.

I just have absolutely NO idea why my machine keeps turning on, and I
believe that's the same boat as the OP.

Hi,

I had looked in there before, and just looked again, but don't know what I
should be checking or playing with in there...

Now... one thing I did try was the hybrid sleep option (enable/disable),
which was on... I disabled it and when my computer went into standby it was
effectively an S1 state, ie the fans were still running on it, power seemed
to be on to most components.

But I couldn't get it to power back on properly, it would fire up the hard
drive etc. but the screen didn't come back on...ever, I ended up having to
switch it off at the back of the machine (hard off) and leave it like that
for a few seconds before bringing it back to make it start up again ok.

I'm just baffled here, and didn't think standby should be this hard!

The computer can be restarted from software or hardware. One of the hardware
items that can restart is network access.
You did not say what kind of network configuration you have, but try
disconnecting the cable (phone or Ethernet etc) from the computer and see if
the computer stays asleep. If so get back and someone will help you get that
feature disabled.

One thing I just did do, which I don't know yet whether it has fully worked,
but my computer stayed off all night last night, was this:

From reading another thread it led me to look at the Event Logs (Control
Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Event Viewer.

Then Looking at Windows Logs-> System.

From here you can see the computer going to sleep and waking up, and so see
what it's running on wake. My PC seemed to be complaining that it couldn't
renew its IP address and so was waking to try and do so (at least so I
think). So I've given my pc a static IP.... and so far so good... I'll let
you know if it wakes up again in the future...

Aaaand... no.

My wife just messaged me to say the pc started up again.

Dangit.

More investigation needed. This is truly an annoying issue with Vista

Hi Shawn,

That's a great post and very nicely brings together everything that I have
been looking at in trying to solve the problem... but unfortunately I have
tried all of those things already :(

Still the pc wakes.

I'll be checking the logs some more tonight to see what woke it up this time.

Sorry Hal for the thread hijack, I hope I haven't lead it astray from your
own issue?

Ok, Just wanted to state I MAY (emphasis on MAY) have fixed my problem, which
I hope in turn maybe helps hal.

On looking in the event logs I noted that the computer was always finding
that the network adapter was connected and therefore powering the computer
back up, even though EVERYTHING told it to not use the LAN for wake up events.

Anyway, I was looking in the properties of the Network adapter and found a
setting that pertained to what sort of data would wake the computer. I can't
remember the exact tab or field name now, sorry, I'm at work and my work pc
is XP... but I think it's under the Advanced tab, then look along that for
something that looks right. In any case there's a property that was set to
'Magic Packet' or similar, it had a bunch of other options, but one of them
was 'none' so I set it to that.

So far I've had over a day of no wakes from sleep, and all seems to be well.

Fingers crossed.
