My Pagefile.sys is Out of Control!

K

KLHT

I have two 80GB hard drives on my WinXP MCE version 2002 service pack 2
system. It is set up pretty much just like my last computer (now my
husband's)--Lots of partitions, with, the OS the first drive and a
2.8GB partition (S), on the second drive, set aside specifically for
the pagefile. The main difference between the systems is that the old
one isn't a Media Center Edition, but XP Home.

One my current system, no matter what Virtual Memory settings I use, my
system insists on creating a GIANT pagefile.sys on either the C or L
partition (both on same hard disk). I blocked that by copying some
large files into L to reduce available space. Since then, the huge
pagefile gets recreated on C after each reboot.

After searching forever to find anything that didn't just tell me to
reset virtual memory settings (which I've done about 32 million times
with no change), I finally came across this and thought for sure I'd
have my solution.

No such luck. I don't have any Norton AV on this machine. I did try to
reset, and reboot with my ZoneAlarm security suite set not to start at
all, but I still had a 1.6 GB pagefile on C!

Right now, the OS has bequeathed me a 1,569,932 KB pagefile on C, and a
658,496 KB pagefile on my L drive (leaving only 38.8 MB free on L). The
partition I have set to be the only place with a pagefile, the 2.8GB S
drive, is empty.

Does anyone know of anything else I can try. This is drving me batty!

The obvious candidate to look at is Zone Alarm. On my machine Windows
Defender monitors changes. Turn them off whilst Offline, make the changes
and then reboot. Keep a 50 mb pagefile on C partition.

hi Karen

I'm not a big fan of the pagefile as i run dual 3Ghz cpu's and 4Gb ram
my system is setup for software development and i need all the space
and speed my comp can give me.

i made a reg file to clear the pagefile.sys file on reboot or restart

here i will explain step by step how to make the reg file and use it

----------------------------------------------------------------------

this is the registry change to clear the pagefile.sys on reboot or
restart

1. open notepad

2.copy and paste the following into notepad

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management]
"ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000001

3.within notepad select file\save as

4.name the file clear_pagefile_shutdown.reg

5.Locate the above saved file in the folder you saved it to, right
click the file and from the menu select merge and follow the prompts.
Or double click on the file for the same result.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

the following reg file will undo the above if you would like to restore
the pagefile.sys as you have it today

1. open notepad

2.copy and paste the following into notepad

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management]
"ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000000

3.within notepad select file\save as

4.name the file undo_clear_pagefile.reg

5.Locate the above saved file in the folder you saved it to, right
click the file and from the menu select merge and follow the prompts.
Or double click on the file for the same result.

note: for some reason the format in the text didnt dispaly properly as
shown

as it was posted above

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session
Manager\Memory Management]

note the \Contro l\ > should be \Control\ requires cursor
then backspace at "l"

or replace with the following

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management]

Gerry,

I had already tried setting VM and rebooting (offline) with Zone Alarm
set to not start. I've now tried your suggestion and also tried
rebooting with Zone Alarm, Windows Defender, Spybot Teatimer, &
Spyblaster not starting any processes. Still, despite any other Virtual
Memory settings, my OS continues to recreate a 1,569,932KB pagefile.sys
on my C partition. UGH.

Thanks anyway,
Karen

Thanks for the suggestion, Diablo. Actually, that Reg key is already
set to dword:00000001.
I have even tried just deleting the pagefile.sys (using Unlocker), and
after a few minutes, the computer just reboots itslef and restores the
giant pagefile on C, no matter what else I do it to in the virtual
memory settings.

After making your selection for the pagefile are you clicking on Set
and then restarting the computer?

Quote from http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

At Control Panel | System | Advanced, click Settings in the
"Performance" Section. On the Advanced page of the result, the
current total physical size of all page files that may be in existence
is shown. Click Change to make settings for the Virtual memory
operation. Here you can select any drive partition and set either
'Custom'; 'System Managed' or 'No page file'; then always click
Set before going on to the next partition.

Absolutely clicking "set" and rebooting. I've read that whole Virtual
Memory in Windows XP article on the page you linked to.
