Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me
with my issue :

I have 5 Windows 2000 servers in my LAN, one of this is
the Global catalogue and it is the only GC we have, but
unfortunately it crashed completely. Now no user can logon
to the network. How do I seize this to another server to
make everything work as usual ?

You can simply enable other DCs as GCs. To do this, you need to drill down to the NTDS Settings in each site in Active Directory Sites and Services, right-click the NTDS Settings, choose properties and check the Global Catalogue box. If this is a single domain, make all of your DCs GCs

Hope this helps

Terry,

I might suggest that you make another one of the remaining DCs a Global
Catalog Server. Here is a MSKB Article on how to do this:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313994

Furthermore, I might take this opportunity to suggest that you make at least
two of the remaining DCs a Global Catalog Server. Having redundancy is a
very important thing - as you are now unfortunately finding out.

Also, the DC/GC that crashed - did it hold any of the five FSMO roles? If
it did, you will need to transfer / seize that role/those roles to a
remaining Domain Controller. Here are two MSKB Articles on how to do this -
one via the GUI and one via ntdsutil:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255690
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255504

However, I have to make sure that my advice on the GCs is correct with a
question: is this a single domain / tree / forest environment? If it is a
single domain / tree / forest then you do not need to worry about the
placement of a GC in relationship to the FSMO Role of Infrastructure Master.
However, if you have another tree or if you have child domains then the DC
that holds the role of Infrastructure Master should not be a Global Catalog
( unless each and every DC in the entire Forest is also a GC ).

HTH,

Cary
