I might suggest that you make the second DC a Global Catalog Server as well
.. It is always a good thing to have two DCs in each site. The placement of
a Global Catalog server is a different story. If you have a large
environment then the placement of Global Catalog Servers is crucial.
However, if you have a smaller environment ( only two or three DCs in one or
two physical locations - Sites ) then making both DCs a GC is not really an
issue. I would do it.
You have not really given any details about the setup of your network. If
you have one Domain located in one physical Site with two DCs then making
both DCs a Global Catalog Server is a good idea. I would also consider
making both DCs DNS Servers ( with Active Directory Integrated DNS - make
sure to update your DHCP Servers Options as well so that your clients will
have the updated information ). However, if you have a sub-domain or a
second domain tree then I would be more careful where I place my GCs. In
that scenario you need to *EITHER* make sure that all of your DCs are also
Global Catalog Servers *OR* make sure that the DCs that hold the fsmo role
of Infrastructure Master are NOT Global Catalog Servers.
I might also take this opportunity to suggest that you set up Sites
correctly ( if you have not already done so ). Even if you have but one
Site it is still a good idea to have it properly set up.
Additionally, I would make sure that there is also a Reverse Lookup Zone in
your DNS ( in addition to the Forward Lookup Zone ).
