Toshiba are generally loaded with a lot of JUNK!

A few questions for you,

Processor in your laptop?

How much ram? (2GB is needed for Vista to perform decent)

Try this

Start>Run msconfig

Try disabling things in the startup tab that you may not need.
Be careful you can mess things up in there.
Don't disable everything at once. Do it 1 or 2 at a time.
You can always put things back in if it is needed by
the system.

I have a lot of hardware in my PC and I have 50 +/- things running
at any one time.

Good Luck

Return the laptop to the place where you purchased it and tell them to fix
it or give you a new one.
