My Network Places is empty...

Using WinXP home (up to date) and a dual integrated lan
motherboard (also up to date). After running the network
wizard my computer doesn't appear in My Network Places.
Clicking on view network computers brings up an error
message telling me that the work group i put my computer
in is not accessable and that I might not have permission
to use the network resource. From the laptop I was
trying to network with I can see the desktop cpu. in the
workgroup but recieve a similar message when I try to
acccess it.

This is often to do with the firewall, i had the problem
with norton, you just get into the firewall part of it
and use the wizard to configure it.

always remember like I just told another person for
their problem as I am looking for an answer to my own is
that with networking your best friend is the command
prompt screen. Netstat command gives you your info if
you are on an established connection, ipconfig gives you
the ip and submask of the machine and ping tells you if
your tcp capability is working by pinging the other
computers already on your network.

When setting up a wireless device on a network using
network wizard if you lose your wirless connection after
restarting because of the firewall it throws up on your
local area connection (xp's firewall) then you just have
2 run it again, then wait, wait, wait, making sure you go
and disable the firewall again under properties on your
lan and you should slowly but surely start seeing the
other computer appear under your network places.
