My Network Places is Empty

G

Guest

I am running Win XP SP 2 and suddenly my network places is empty. I have
done some work on this already so I can give you the run down to date:

1) I can see all the computers in my workgroup by going to workgroup
computers (and access them as well).

2) I cannot get the seach function in my network places to find the
computers or locations.

3) When I open MY Network Places (from now on MNP) there is no flash light
searching, nor is there any effect of pushing F5 to make net crawler work.

4) There is no entry in the registry for
Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\NetCrawl

5) Running the network wizard will not fix the problem. No other computer
on the network has a problem.

6)Disabling the firewall has no effect.

In summery, all aspects of the network and sharing are working fine, but on
one computer MNP is empty (unless I specifically add a location manually and
those will not sort) and I cannot get it to seach the network.

Thanks very much for any and all assistance

First make sure that NetBT is consistently Enabled on each computer.

Next, look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from the problem computer, and from 2 others, so we can
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Thanks for the help.

PS-On 2 of the computer changing the path did not help (they have this path
"%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program
Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Utility") and I had to type in
c:\utility\browstat.
On the other with path
"%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\WINDOWS\DPDrv;C:\utility" it worked fine'

Any idea why?

Thanks for the help.

PS-On 2 of the computer changing the path did not help (they have this path
"%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program
Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Utility") and I had to type in
c:\utility\browstat.
On the other with path
"%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\WINDOWS\DPDrv;C:\utility" it worked fine'

Any idea why?

Here's a start.

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking

Master browser name is: OWENDESKTOP

Is OWENDESKTOP running XP Home or Pro?

Finally, you ought to clean up OwenLaptop.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in answering. Nvidia Forceware took some of my time to
deal with and then there is that pesky work thinkg.

Answers:
1) Delt with Nividia
2)All computers running XP Home so error is normal
3) Cleaned up the laptop.

Behavior is now changed. It will find most (but not all) of the network
places on its own, but it cannot sort them by computer. It thinks they are
all on the internet, including the network places on the computer having the
problem. Is this something that resetting the TCP/IP stack could help or are
there other things to try now.

Thanks,

Owen

Actually it will rearrange the icons by icons, but not seperate them by
computer. Also, it still cannot find all the network locations (but does
find most of them).
Is something corrupt that needs to be reloaded?

Thanks again.

Hi Owen,

That's a great start! When you have other computers being displayed as if they
are on the Internet, this is usually a personal firewall setting. You have to
make sure that the subnet is in the Trusted (Local) Zone in the zoned firewalls.
Both Norton Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm have caused this problem, and I'll
bet others will too.

If you can't find a personal firewall causing the problem, it might be an LSP /
Winsock problem, but I'd start with the firewall issue. Diagnosing an LSP /
Winsock problem is destructive, and doesn't provide a positive indication of the
problem. And it requires repetitive diagnosis.

Okay,

I have run through the TCP/IP stuff (LSP and Winsock) any not gotten
anywhere. Is the any chance this is some sort of folder (My Network)
problem. I have 2 identical computers (newly installed windows xp on both-so
no firewalls but windows firewall and the removed Nvidia yet) and when I ask
my network places to list by details they look identical on both computers,
but on will not show the headins when sorting by computer. Under the
computer heading each knows which computer is which and both list the
location as The Internet for all computers including themselves.

What now, is there a reset for Ny Network Places forlder?

Thanks again.

Aha,

Final step was to right click, arrange icons by name, show in groups.
Everything is working now.

Of course, now I have to install antivirus, firewall, etc. That should
create new issues.

Thanks you very much for your help.
