My menu items have a white background and black writing instead of blended in

Will all have a white box around them instead of blended into the background
colour as in other apps

In explorer, navigate to the following folder:

'C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna'

Double-click the 'luna.msstyles' file.

Click OK when the display properties dialog appears.

If you are referring to the "Start All Programs menu", you can disable that
by r-clicking the Start button. Go to properties, click the customize
button, you will find on the Advanced tab an option to Highlight newly
installed programs. Un-check it and you will have no more highlighting.
