My Java Applet isn't working

Here's what happened:

I opened up IE, it said I needed updates from Windows.
There were like 12 critical updates or something. I
updated and rebooted. While loading up, I got an error
that said Windows could not update the file %1 from %2 or
something similar to that. And then said that Windows may
not run properly. Press any key to continue.

My computer finally booted and installed the updates. But
now the Java applet doesn't load. I don't get a gray
screen, it's just a blank page; the background of the
website is all that's there.

So I went to my control panel and uninstalled the updates.
I stopped getting the %1 and %2 errors, but Java still
won't work.

I played with the advanced options in IE. Still didn't
work. I downloaded the Java VM from java.sun.com. Didn't
work. I downloaded the Java Runtime Environment. Didn't
work.

I went to microsoft.com and downloaded IE again and then
re-installed. Still doesn't work and now the %1 and %2
errors are back.

My last option is a System Restore, but I don't want to do
that since the latest date is June 15... which was a long
time ago.

So I've been using Mozilla until I'm able to get this
figured out. Except I can't get it figured out. Any help?

This is a common scenario - check here:

Jim,

When I type "net stop cryptsvc," I get a message which
says "The service name is invalid. Make sure you are
specifying a valid service name, and then try again."
Dunno what that means.

Two things you should know: 1, I haven't gotten the %1/%2
errors in a while, but it also seems like I can't take any
updates from microsoft.com anymore. 2, I have Windows ME.

As far as all the Java problems, I think I'm going to
stick with Mozilla. I've updated from java.sun.com a
thousand times; all of my settings check out where Java
should be working, and it just doesn't. Like I said, I'm
not getting a gray screen. It's weird.

Hi Sam - Ok, don't worry about the crypto service stuff if you're ME. Can
you get to Windows Update and, if so, does it show that you need to install
any critical updates? Next, have you installed hotfix 818529? If not,
please do so. Next, try completely uninstalling the Sun Java 2 Runtime
environment from Add-Remove programs, then re-boot and try re-installing the
Sun Java VM. Next if that didn't help, I would recommend that you try and
install the MS Java VM per the directions I previously posted and see if
that helps your Java problem. Please post back with your results.

Alright Jim. Brief recap: my issue is that when I open up
a site with Java using Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows
ME, I don't even get a gray screen. It's not even loading.
No error message, no nothing. Whatever the background of
the site is, is what I see.

I followed what you said... went to windowsupdate.com and
took a few updates:

A cumulative patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
(822925).
security update for outlook; 330994
windows security update 823559
security microsoft vm 816093
security for jscript version 5.6 814078

After restarting, I got this error:

"%1 %2
Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2"

It says it 8 times, then says: "Windows could not upgrade
one or more system files before starting. Windows may not
start or run properly. If Windows fails to start, run
SETUP again. Press any key to continue.

Completed updated files, continuing to load Windows..."

My computer starts up, drum logo comes up, it updates
stuff, and still no sign of Java.

Next step: I uninstalled, then re-installed Sun Java
Runtime SE v1.4.2_01. Still didn't work. Then I went to
the visualware site to see if I had MS Java installed...
and the test failed. It says I don't have Microsoft Java
support installed. The coglab site test doesn't work,
either. But at dancespots.net, I passed their three tests.
And still, if I go to a site with Java, it doesn't come up.

My advanced Internet Options has the Sun Java checked.

Each time I restart Windows, the %1 and %2 errors
disappear. It went from 8 of those errors to 1 and now
none.

But still no Java.

Hi Sam - Try re-installing the MS Java VM per my directions in my original
post in this thread. Then select it (unslect Sun) in IE6|Tools|Internet
Options|Advanced. Please post back with your results.

Sorry... I wasn't able to find your instructions for
dloading Microsoft VM. That was a huuuge post. :)

But, after dloading and installing the VM, I ran IE, and
immediately began playing poker for the first time in
weeks. Yay!

Thanks Jim.
