Mohsin,

Can you give us more information? What icons are missing from the desktop?
When did they disappear? Can you launch other applications from task
manager? Are you attached to a domain? What third party software do you
have installed? When did you notice this behavior? Was it after installing
any software?

Thanks,
Dennis Davis

I'm having the same problem that Moshin described below however, I'm using XP Home Edition. In addition to the icons missing, my start button and task bar are also missing. The desktop for all users is blank with only the wallpaper showing. It is not possible to right click on the desktop or to move any shortcuts to the desktop

After looking through some of the threads dealing with missing icons, I tried the steps in Knowledge Base Article 318027 (Taskbar is missing when you log on to Windows). I tried to create a new user account but the "Local Users and Groups" folder does not exist in the Computer Management (local) list (see step 8). I have also tried to perform a clean boot (article 310353) to no avail

In response to your questions below

All Icons are missing from the desktop (applications, recycle, My Computer, etc.) Also taskbar and start button are missing

Disappeard after using the "guest" account and normal shutdown and re-start

All applications are launcable from the task manager using the "run" command. However network connections are not working

Attached to a DSL line. Don't know if there is a domain

No software was installed prior to this problem being observed. Other applicatons on this computer include MS Office, Quicken, Outlook, McAfee, Musicmatch jukebox, Daytimer and some misc stuff that has been in use for months or years

Thanks in advance for your help
