I have tried reinstalling xp in recovering console since my computer won't
load windows in safe mode. I have to boot from the xp cd because it says I
have a boot disk failure. I would like to be able to at least try and recover
my pictures and documents. I don't know what caused this crash but really
need access to my files!Everytime I try to do a repair install from recovery
console it tells me to choose a windows dir, so I do and then nothing else
happens, so I reboot and then it gives me the same error boot disk failure
insert system cd and boot.

Any ideas on how to get it working again without a clean install?

Thanks for your immediate help!

Take your drive to somebody who can recover files from a damaged drive.. the
more you mess with it in the way you are, the less chance you have of
getting anything meaningful back..

In the meantime, you may want to avail yourself of a new HDD and start
over..

I found a program called knoppix it is free and i should post at sticky
on it
it uses linux off the cd and does not access hard drive it will boot up
you use the linus shell to fix your hdd it is a free program. (and it
works)

used it yesterday to fix friends laptop it would not boot AT ALL no
recovery no flooppy no cd.......Excellent program

Unless one is au fait with Knoppix and file recovery off of a damaged drive,
it is probably better to take the drive to someone who knows what they are
doing..

Interesting that you ran a CD based Linux from a machine with "no recovery
no flooppy no cd".. no CD?
