My freshly repaired XP system grinds to a halt

I repaired from the OS CD, Defragmented the boot partition, turned off
firewall & virus scan and still the system appears to hang with just
browser, Outlook Express & Yahoo IM windows open.

In Task Manager, CPU use is under 10%; I've used Administrative
Tools-->Performance monitor to see disk, paging & processor are under 10%.

Maybe I need a little (or a lotta) sleuthing but I need some suggestions as
to how I should start.

Sometimes a Repair Install covers up a multitude of hidden problems.
Maybe that's the case here.
