my fax died!

My fax service in windows 2000 professional has stopped
working. It no longer appears in the windows components,
so that I cannot remove it. I cannot install it from the
CD either, since I get an error message when I click on
the install windows components button which says something
like "Exception calling handler routine for fax. [some
addresses] The installation library for component fax
could not be initialized." If you can help, please email
to (e-mail address removed). Thanks.

Are you sure you are using Win 2000? The reason why i am asking is in Win
2000 the fax component does not appear as part of windows components and
also there is nothing like uninstallation of fax in win 2k.

Thanks,

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, I am using win 2000. The error message
I get is when I go into install add-on components of the win2000
installation disc. Further detials are as follows:

The only thing I omitted from the first message were some addresses:
"Handler address is 0x7005431e Function = 0x1 Param1 = 0x0
Param2 = 0x6d858 Exception type = 0xc0000005 Addr = 0x78010494.

The first message, beginning "Exception..." and the above appear in a
grey window, then when OK is clicked, the second message appears in
another grey window, exactly as I have worded it. These are the two
messages that I get when I click on "install add-on components" from
setup.exe of the windows 2000 installation disk.

Other than that, of course I cannot fax or use fax printer. When I
tried to delete the fax printer, the computer froze. If I try to enter
fax via control panel, the computer freezes.

It is interesting that earlier in the day on which the problem arose,
I used fax printer successfully.

Like Chandrasekhar notes below, there is no way to install/uninstall Fax on
win2000. Fax gets added automatically when a modem is detected.

What exactly do you mean when you say "fax died". Can you Fax Service as one
of the services running? Can you send/receive faxes?

Thanks for your reply. If I try to delete my fax printer, the computer
freezes. If I try to send a fax via fax printer, computer freezes. If
I try to open fax service management, I get an error saying the
computer's name may be incorrect and the computer freezes. I do not
see fax service as one of the services running (I assume it is named
fax or something like that). And as I say, when I go to install add-on
components from the installation disk, I get the aforementioned error
messages.

Thanks.
