my excel shuts down when I try to create a new book, what´s wrong

When I tried to create a new book, the excel application shuts down and
closes itself. I did remove microsoft office ( home student version ) and
reinstall the suite. I have updated the files in windows update. But still do
not work.What is wrong?
Power Point and word work just fine.

What version do you have? Try searching for a file called *.xlb (Ensure you
search for hidden files as this may be hidden), then delete it and Excel
will create a new one. it is the toolbar customisation file that often gets
corrupted.
