My Documents Hidden after System Restore???

After reinstalling windows components on my friends Compaq most of his
programs (one's that were installed after he got his computer) were
still there and functioning, but now we can't find his documents,
spreadsheets, and pictures. The restore function said that it wouldn't
delete any files, did windows rename them and hide them?

He has a '04 Compaq 2.6Ghz Celeron running windows XP and with 256k of
RAM.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I am guessing that he used a different name on the re-install. This
will create a second user and that user will not be able to access the
files. If this is the case, you can fix it in XP Pro by finding the
other user files and taking ownership, then copying them over to the
new user. The old documents should be under c:\Documents and
Settings\<username>\My Documents

We looked under c:\Documents and Settings\ and there were two user
names. He says he saved everything under My Documents but couldn't
find any documents or anything under either user name.

After doing a search on the harddrive no documents, spreadsheets, or
Jpeg's came up. :-(

The restore function said that it wouldn't delete any files

Which "restore" function you're referring to? FYI, Compaq's Factory Restore
(or Full Restore) erases all the existing data.

I believe it was called Windows Restoration. The main reason we tried
it was that it specifically said "you will have to reinstall programs
but will not lose any data files".
