System Restore question

My friend's System Restore is not making any automatic restore points. He
can manually make restore points. On the phone I had him open System
Restore to insure he did not have a check mark before "turn off system
restore". No check mark there. In the WinXP help files it indicates that
System Restore will make automatic restore points within its memory
capability. He has 12% of his hard drive allocated with over 9 GB provided.
My setup is similar but I have months of past restore points available
without having manually entered them.

Any ideas I might pass on to him? Thanks.

System restore is only good for going back one or two weeks at the most.
The 12% space allowed is way too much. You should decrease that space.
Having too much space and too many restore points is one of the things that
can lead to corruption in the restore points. Besides there is no point
since SR is only effective as I said out to a max of two weeks. Longer than
that and there are too many inconsistencies.

Rock, how much space do you recommend assigning to SR?

Thanks

That depends on how many restore points you want to keep. Some days there
is only one restore point made and others more such as when installing
software and updates. About 750MB to 1GB should give around 14 days worth,
depending on the above factors. You have to see how big restore points are
on your system to refine this.
