"my computer"

When I click the "my computer" icon it now takes 30 sec. for the screen to
open. If I try to close the window I get the "program not responding"
message, and then it eventually opens. This also happens if try the "my
computer" from within a program when I am trying to save to a floppy, etc. I
recently added an external USB2 hard drive but removing it did not have any
effect. I tried restoring from an earlier date and that fixed it but only
for a day.
Any suggestions?
