My computer would not regonise my microphone/headphone

I had an old microphone/headphone that I used with my old XP computer, which
works flawlessly. When I purchased a Vista Home Premium PC and I tried to use
the mic/headset on it, but Windows cant find any recording or playback
devices except for my speakers. Because I had given my old computer to
someone, I predict the mic/headset must have broken. So I purchased a new
microphone/headphone. However Windows still would not regonise the hardware.
Can anyone help me to fix this problem, I do not wish to except that I had
wasted my money for nothing.

Best regards
