My computer will not shut down. Can anyone help?

My family recently bought a new computer. When we first got it, it shut down
fine. Then one day, the sound went out. I rolled back the sound driver, and
now I have sound, but the computer will not shut down. I have to force it
off. However, if I update the sound driver, the computer shut down by
itself, but I get no sound. Is there anything I can do to correct this?

Open device mgr,expand the sound tree,R.click on the device,select,uninstall,
dont restart computer,exit device mgr,shutdown computer.On restart,xp will
reinstall.
