my computer switches on and off all by itself!!!!

hi,

i've a compaq presario desktop P4 1.9GHz. 256MB RAM and
40GB HDD. i'm running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
Basically, it switches off all by itself. It doesnt give
the one minutes timer like the blaster worm. but it
suddenly closes all the windows and says.. "saving all
your settings" and "windows is shutting down". As if this
is not enough, it switches on all by itself too. i've a
dial up connection and the phone line is not connected to
the modem when this happens. could this be a virus?
please help its driving me nuts.

Jagadish,

Two possibilites:

* XP restarts while attempting to shut down
* Power management setting in BIOS (Wake-On). Disable it.
