computer restarting itself

Missy

After I shut down my computer, it mysteriously re-starts
itself 1-10 minutes later. I have a Compaq Presario 6000
running Windows XP. If I disconnect from my cable
internet, it won't restart anymore, but our family is on
wireless, and I'm the wired one, so if I disconnect, it
messes up everyone. My computer doesn't have a manual
off/on switch, so I'm having to unplug every time. A
computer tech friend says it's a simple problem and
mentioned re-setting something or other, but he hasn't
had time to get by and do it. Does anybody recognize
what this is? Thanks, Missy

could it be a virus cuasing this problem? Do you have a
firewall of any type? Sounds to me like someone has
control over your pc. Do you know the command to change
your ip address? Go to command prompt ........type
ipconfig /release then after it completes type:
ipconfig /renew.........this will change your ip address
and prevent whoever it is from controlling your pc. Make
sure you arent sharing your harddrive.......and if you are
on a network make sure your security is setup properly.

Hello and welcome to my world.
Is it a new computer? Or new OS.
Here is my story, i got a new computer with a cable
internet connection, and it would restart by it's self. I
found out what the problem is. The problem was the USB.
My motherboard did not support the modem i was using
through USB, so i have to use a network card instead to
gain access to the internet. So are you using USB?
