"MY Computer" search too long

Whenever I go to My Computer the page goes blank for about 30 seconds and a
flashlight icon pops up. After about 30 seconds it shows the files in My
Computer. It has never taken this long before. It's been doing this for
awhile and I thought it was realted to a svchost.exe problem that I have
struggled with for months and just got fixed today. However the search
problem in My Computer continues. Where do I begin?

XP Pro updated SP2
LabZones virus/firewall updated
Dell XPS Laptop

Do you have drive letters mapped to network drives that are not currently
available? That was happening when I took my laptop home without
disconnecting network drives. My Computer would spin its wheels until they
all timed out.

Not that I am aware of. How would I check it? I don't have any other drives
available anyway. Any other suggestions?

Open a dos session and type

net use

It will list any drive letters you have mapped. If you ever map drives, XP
will try to reconnect at login unless you have persistent mapping disabled.
You can disable it by typing

net use /persistent:no

Sorry, but there are none in the list. Using the persisent:no command it told
me command finished sucessfully. But I still have the same problem. My
printer has storage card slots that are listed in my computer, I deleted
them, as they will come back up whenever we use one in the future. But even
that didn't help. I'm befuddled.

One other thing, I have a PDA and the device shows up in My Computer but
there is no delete command for that. I don't feel that's the problem.

Thanks for you responses so far. Any other suggestions?
