"My Computer" will not show drives

This happens from time to time with XP Home. When I open "My Computer" it
will display the side bar (search, etc.) for a second or two, with nothing on
the right side, then it goes blank and shows the flashlight searching. I've
tried "back doors" like moving up the tree from "My Documents", but I get the
same result. I've also tried repairing my installation. Nothing works, and
I'm truely baffled. Thanks for any solutions or ideas!
