My Computer screen changes DVD to CD-rom

Help,
First, I'm running WinXP pro, 1 gb memory, Asus K8V deluxe motherboard AMD
64, 2 internal hard drives( 200 & 100Gig) and 1 external 250Gig drive. When I
click on my computer the drives show dvd-rw and dvd/cd-rw but when I insert a
dvd, the drive changes to cd rom and will not play or record dvd. I even went
out and bought a new dvd burner but same problem. These drives have been
working fine until recently. I did upgrade to sp2 but they worked fine after
but not now. I've wasted about 10 blank dvd's and am running out of blanks.
Thanks, chas638

I forgot to mention that I have been using Nero, Roxio and InterVideo WinDVD
to burn cds and dvds. They were all working fine and supported my burners
until now.

I am having the same problems on my Dell 8300. I reckon such glitches are
unacceptable from Microsoft. I cannot now download from the net straight to
rewritable cd or dvd whereas on my old Dell P11 running Win ME i could
download really fast onto my Ricoh burner, using the dvd as a floppy. Who
cares if this is not the 'correct' way to save to media? I have an NEC
2100AD burner and the Dell does not even recognise a blank dvd, nor does it
let me save to previously written DVD's and CD's that were recorde on my old
PC. I suspect that the original Nero software is the cause. I have now
reinstalled the Dell 'Sonic Record Now' recommended burning software,
however even simple operations appear so complex, with the 'ready to write
to your files to CD' instruction and the burn speed is far too slow. Either
way, XP Pro is proving a crock of shite and unless i can get it sorted I
will revert to ME!

I think that XP will probably be happier without you. You have no idea what
you're doing, but see fit to blame it on the operating system. Under Win ME
you obliviously had packet writing software (probably Nero's InCD)
installed, which was what allowed you to save directly to optical media. ME
has no native CD burning capability. You won't be able to read those
packet-written disks unless you install the same packet-writing software on
your XP system.

Hello Raymond,
Just to get back to the original problem. Do you know why the DVD icons on
my computer change to cd rom when I insert a dvd?

You've indicated that you've used three different programs for burning. I
know that Nero and Roxio don't always play nicely together. I would do the
following:
1) Uninstall either Roxio or Nero
2) Make sure that whatever's left has been updated to the latest available
version
3) In My Computer, bring up the recording tab in the properties dialog for
each
drive and make sure that "Enable CD Recording..." is *not* checked.

#3 will disable XP's native burning capability, which is also a cause of
conflicts at times. If you get one of your burning programs to work, stick
with it and leave the other(s) alone. You might also want to uninstall both
Roxio and Nero, then reinstall one or the other in step one.

Hello Again,
Well I've tried everything. I did just install Mcafee virus scan 9 but have
disabled it. I also tried to hook up my Sony Mavica and now my computer no
longer recognizes it either. I've tried enabling autoplay and disabling it,
nothing. Is there a good program for WinXP pro that scans registry and
programs for problems? Every time I insert a disk into the drives, they
change to cd-rom and after I remove, back to original. Thanks for all your
help,
