My computer runnng XP Home will not network.

I have two computers one running XP Professional and the other XP Home
Edition through a wired router. I can successfully get the computer with
Professional running to network, but the Home Edition will not network even
though everything looks like it is working, i.e. the Network Wizard.
Firewalls are all configured, network adapter drivers up to date, but still
no joy. Does anyone know if the Home Edition would need configured some
other way in order to establish a connection?

I have a similar problem.
My network is two desktops (DSL D--link router, wired WinXP Pro desktop
and wired WinXP Home desktop).
The WinXP Home desktop can see the d-drive and SharedDocs on the other.
The WinXP Pro cannot see the d-drive or SharedDocs on the other.
Both are set up the same way and the d-drives are shared.
All have Ad-Aware, AVG and registry maintenance up-to-date and all
current Microsoft updates.
I have another network (SMC cable router, laptop wired WinXP Pro,
Desktop wireless WinXP Home and Desktop wired Win98) and everything
works.

Any ideas on what is the problem with the first setup?

The setup should be the same on Professional and Home Edition.

The most common problem in Windows networking is an improperly
configured firewall program (Windows Firewall, Norton, McAfee,
PC-cillin, ZoneAlarm, etc) that blocks networked access.

What does "will not network even though everything looks like it is
working" mean? What works, and what doesn't work? If there are any
error messages, what do they say, and what are you doing when they
occur? With that information, someone should be able to help get your
network working.

I put "will not network although everything looks OK" which I know is a bit
vague because I did not want to go into elaborate details of what I am trying
to do. Basically I am trying to network an XBox360, this may look like a
gaming thread, but I need to set up a basic network first. Microsoft have
brought out a new gaming tool called XNA Game Studio which lets you design
games on your computer running either Windows XP or Windows Media Centre
Edition.

You can then transfer your 'game' onto your XBox360 and play it, you can
also use elements of the XBox360 to design your game, if you get your network
set up and the computer and the XBox 'talking'. I have everything running OK
as regards the XNA Game Studio but cannot get the XBox to network with the
computer which it has to do in order to transfer the game data. The XBox360
is designed to network through a router or similar device and will stream
music and photos from a PC Media Player. Streaming this XNA Game studio
material is exactly the same.

The XBox will network happily with my other computer running XP Professional
and everything works fine. but not the Home Edition computer. This may sound
like some gaming feature to do with XBox360, but it is not. You first have to
set up a basic network system with the XBox which is just the same as setting
up an 'ordinary' network. Once you run the network wizard the XBox will pick
up your computer and show the connection in the Media section of the
Dashboard, you can then stream your music and pictures through the XBox and
show everything on your TV. As I stated earlier this is all working with the
computer running XP Professional, but efforts to get the XBox to network with
the Home edition computer fail all the time.

As the XBox can only pick up one computer at a time I have tried
disconnecting the XP Professional computer, the one which works OK and have
even changed all the leads to the router but nothing. I do not get an error
message or anything to indicate there is a problem. When I view my shared
docs folder on the Home Edition computer it contains music etc but will not
stream to the XBox.

This same streaming process will work fine with the XP Professional
computer, but fails with the Home edition. The only indication of a problem
is the computer connection page on the XBox dashboard comes up "failure to
connect to a PC", when attempting to network with the Home Edition
connection. The XBox360 will network with all Windows XP editions.

I will have another look at my Firewalls but all relevant ports have been
opened in Windows and I run Zone Alarm which is also configured. Both the
computers run Zone Alarm.

Thanks for the details. I recommend un-installing ZoneAlarm on the XP
Home Edition computer while troubleshooting the network. That's the
only way to determine whether ZoneAlarm is causing the problem. After
un-installing it, go to Start > Run > msconfig > Startup and un-check
any ZoneAlarm bits that remain. Don't re-install ZoneAlarm until
everything is working.

Since you connect to the Internet through a home broadband router, you
don't need ZoneAlarm for protection against access by other Internet
users. Your router acts as an incoming firewall.
