Does anyone know how or why the "My Computer" application would automatically
start when I switch on my PC? It has only just started happening, it is not
in my Start-up list, and I can't find any settings to stop it!

All help or suggestions very gratefully recieved! MLS

Hi,

This can be caused by leftovers from cleaning up spyware. Try this:

Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, uncheck the line "restore previous
folder windows at logon". Click apply/ok, do not reboot yet.

Start/run msconfig, on the general tab select the diagnostic mode. Click
apply/ok and reboot at prompted.

The folder should not show up now. Rerun msconfig, put the system back in
normal mode. Click apply/ok and reboot once more. Does this help?

For most users, this will resolve the issue. For some that still have
registry damage it will not. If this is the case, could you please export
and post the contents of these keys in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the branches to each key (do this one
at a time). Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then
save to the desktop. Once you have saved both keys, close the registry
editor. Right-click one of the saved files on the desktop, choose edit, it
should open in notepad. Click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to
this post and click in the message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the
contents. Repeat for the other saved key, then send the post for
examination.

Thanks for those that offered help, although I'm afraid none of it worked.

I have, however, managed to track down the problem, so I'll post the answer
here in case anyone else has the same problem:

I reccently installed some synchronisation software that came with my
Motorola A1000 (3G mobile phone). One of the programs was an mRouter, so I
can use the mobile phone as a modem.

It seems that during installation, a shortcut for the mRouter was added to
my All Users StartUp folder, but all it does is point to My Computer, hence
the window is opened whenever I boot-up.

The solution was simply to delete the short-cut!

I have no idea whether there was any other functionality for this shortcut,
but as I have no plans to use the mRouter I didn't need to worry about it. It
WFM! MLS

Glad you got it resolved and thanks for posting back.

I have a similar problem, but the "fixes" in this thread didn't help.

After installing Norton Ghost 9.0, the folder C:\Program files\Symantec\Norton
Ghost is open each time I reboot or start my computer. I'd kinda like to stop
this from happening. Any ideas?

That's not the same problem as discused in this thread where the My
Computer folder opened on start up. Check the two startup folders for it:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Check for it in msconfig on the startup tab. Search the registry for
that key.
